Yolo County Library Summer Reading Program – Fizz, Boom Read!

Post Date:05/20/2014 11:28 AM

Press Release

(Woodland, CA) – The Yolo County Library is celebrating reading, science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, and all of this during the summer of 2014. Fizz, Boom, Read! – the summer reading program, which begins on June 1 and runs through August 16, will include free reading clubs, exciting events and great prizes for all age groups.

Reading over the summer is an important and valuable activity for all ages. It is a time to explore new books and learn about new authors, ideas and worlds. To encourage everyone to read, all are invited to complete fun, reading-based activities over the summer with the Yolo County Library. Specially designed Fizz, Boom, Read! game boards for each age level are available at all branches. Activities range from reading a story, to drawing a picture, to locating and reading books on various subjects at any branch of the Yolo County Library. Participants who complete all of the activities before August 16, 2014, will earn a complimentary gift, and will be entered into drawings for both local and countywide prizes.

“Summer reading programs help improve the reading skill of students, increase fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, and help reduce the achievement gap,” said Yolo County Librarian Patty Wong. “Self-selection, access to books and sharing books are essential factors in reading motivation and are key elements of summer reading programs.”

The Yolo County library will also host over 60 summer reading program events for residents of all ages at the library branches throughout the county. The event line-up will include magicians, Super Cool Chemistry, puppet shows, live animal presentations and much more. The schedule will vary at each branch, so stop by any Yolo County Library branch beginning on June 1 to pick up a local and countywide schedule and sign up to participate.

These programs are free and sponsored by the Friends of the Davis Public Library, Friends of the Esparto Regional Library, West Sacramento Friends of the Library, Clarksburg Friends of the Library, Friends of the Knights Landing Library, Winters Friends of the Library, Friends of the Yolo Branch and individual donors.
