The Most Important School Supply of All

Post Date:08/27/2014 11:21 AM

Press Release

(Woodland, CA) – September is Library Card Sign-Up month – a time when the American Library Association and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all. To encourage the youngest residents of Yolo County to become life-long learners and library users, the Yolo County Library has partnered with First 5 Yolo to offer free “keeper” books to all children, ages 0 to 5, who either use their existing library card or sign up for one during the month of September.

“Learning to read begins with babies and toddlers,” said Yolo County Librarian Patty Wong. “When children are read to on a daily basis they acquire crucial pre-reading skills such as print awareness, phonological awareness, print motivation, letter knowledge and narrative skills. These early literacy skills help children become successful readers once they start school.”

“Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children,” said First 5 Yolo Executive Director Julie Gallelo. “Studies show that children who are read to in the home, and who use the library, perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.”

The Yolo County Library offers an array of resources for children ages 0 to 5 and their families: special collections of board books for babies and toddlers; materials on early childhood development for parents and caregivers; story times in four different languages (English, Spanish, Russian and Mandarin Chinese); and parenting workshops. The use of library resources is a free and fun way for parents and caregivers to inspire children to love reading and prepare for school.
