Tips to Avoid Being Hammered by a Dishonest Contractor

1. Always check your contractor out on the Contractor’s State Licensing Board website, at http://www.cslb.ca.gov/.

2. Ask for proof of bonding.

3. Ask for proof of Liability Insurance.

4. Ask for proof of workers’ compensation insurance for any parties that intend to work on your project.

5. Follow tips 1-3 if you have sub-contractors.

6. Get references from a local job. Visit the home and see the workmanship.

7. If you are going to use “owner / builder” exception to your project, make sure that you have adequate workers’ compensation insurance coverage with your home owner’s policy.

8. Consider taking out a supplemental insurance policy for your project that will cover you in the event your contractors have no or inadequate coverage.
