About the Disease Prevention Demonstration Project

Senate Bill (SB) 1159 Law established the Disease Prevention Demonstration Project (DPDP), which authorizes licensed pharmacists at participating pharmacies to sell or furnish up to 10 hypodermic needles without a prescription to any person who is 18 years or older. The law is part of an effort in California to prevent the spread of HIV, hepatitis, and other blood-borne diseases.
