The Record Mitigation and Community Reintegration Clinic provides legal representation to individuals seeking expungement and other post-conviction remedies to clear up criminal records after completion of probation or a custodial sentence, thereby removing barriers to economic stability and a return to crime. The Clinic performs outreach and has partnered with the Department of Employment and Social Services to educate County workers on the legal rights of individuals with regards to the consideration of their criminal records in the context of employment decisions.
Potential types of mitigation that the Public Defender's Office can help you obtain include expungement, reduction of a felony to a misdemeanor, early termination of probation, obtaining a certificate of rehabilitation, as well as sealing an arrest record. Descriptions of these services are located in the links on the left hand side of this page. Please review the links and then contact the office as indicated below.
To mitigate your adult record:
First, complete the Record Mitigation Project application and the Personal Data form. These forms can be obtained directly from the Yolo County Public Defender's Office during business hours or they can be downloaded here by clicking on either: Mitigation Application PDFor Mitigation Application MS Word and Personal Data Form PDF
Second, return both forms to the Yolo County Public Defender’s Office in person or by mail. Remember to attach all required supporting documentation!
Third, you will be contacted by an attorney within four to eight weeks letting you know the status of your application and the next step in the process. Please let us know of any change in your contact information. Your request may be dropped if we cannot contact you.
