April Gardening Classes at Community Garden

Post Date:03/25/2014 12:57 PM

Press Release

(Woodland, CA) – Want to learn more about gardening? The Hannah and Herbert Bauer Memorial Community Garden, sponsored by the Yolo County Health Department and located on the west side of 137 N. Cottonwood Avenue in Woodland, is hosting three free gardening classes in April.

On Saturday, April 12, Steve Radosevich, a Yolo County master gardener, will present a workshop from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on composting and using worms in your garden. Steve will be giving away worms (if desired), as well as composting buckets to Woodland residents.

On Saturday, April 12, immediately following the composting workshop, Laurie Green, registered dietician and head of Nutrition Services at the Yolo County Health Department, will host a children’s planting activity from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m. Bring the kids and they’ll get their ‘hands in the dirt’ as they learn how to plant fruits and vegetables and learn how gardens can help families eat healthy foods. The children will also get some garden education goodies to take home.

On Thursday, April 17, the Master Gardeners of Yolo County will teach a basic gardening class in Spanish from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. The class will cover how to plant summer/fall plants, create a planting schedule and use fertilizers, as well as provide an introduction to pesticide-free gardening.

Pre-registration for all classes is required. Contact Rebecca Tryon at the Yolo County Health Department with questions or to register for classes: (530) 666-8640 or rebecca.tryon@yolocounty.org.
