Trash to Table: Learn How to Rescue Home Food Waste
Are you tired of throwing away brown bananas and delegating unused celery and carrot tops to the compost bin? Do you feel frustrated comparing the mound of melon to the mountain of rind on your cutting board? Americans waste about 40% of their food, and up to 25% of that is at home. Fight the statistics by joining the Davis Food Co-op “thrift wizards” for a food waste reduction demonstration on Thursday, June 26, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Blanchard Room of the Mary L. Stephens Branch Library, located at 314 East 14th Street in Davis.
Learn easy, creative ways to rescue the contents of your refrigerator crisper drawer, whether it's making a tart and flavorful grapefruit syrup, pickling a watermelon rind or discovering how to use a vanilla bean three ways. It takes a little effort, a lot of creativity and some chemistry to stretch a food budget and help save the planet. See how it’s done, try samples, and take home the recipes!
This event is part of the Yolo County Library’s 2014 Adult Summer Reading Program.
“The science-based theme of this year’s summer reading program is Fizz, Boom, Read!,” said Yolo County Librarian Patty Wong. “With rising food prices and increasing concerns about the environment, the Trash to Table demonstration is perfect for adults wanting to use creativity, combined with food science, to extend the life of expensive produce and other foods for the benefit of our world.”
No reservations are required. The Blanchard Room of the Mary L. Stephens Branch Library is accessible for persons with disabilities. Presented by the Yolo County Library, all programs free.
